Acupuncture for Perimenopause and Menopause

Midlife women going through perimenopause or menopause have unique physical and emotional needs. Those needs can shift and change over time, and each person’s needs can vary. Perimenopause for you can look totally different than what your best friend is experiencing.
Your healthcare should reflect that reality. Songbird’s personalized acupuncture and herbal medicine approach to perimenopause and menopause treats what you’re dealing with right here, right now. As northern Vermont’s midlife specialist, I can help!
Here’s what I believe: even though midlife is a time of huge transition, it’s also a normal biological process. And it doesn’t have to mean years of suffering. Perimenopause and menopause can be a powerful time of life, one in which you shake off society’s expectations and become more of who you truly are.
But it’s hard to do that if you feel terrible. Acupuncture, herbal medicine, and simple lifestyle changes are effective, safe ways to minimize the rollercoaster of perimenopause and menopause.
Unlike “one size fits all” treatments, Songbird’s approach begins with a detailed assessment of your unique symptoms and body constitution, so that your treatment plan is truly for YOU and adjusts as your needs change.
I work with anyone who’s struggling with midlife hormonal changes, including people who are taking or considering menopausal hormone therapy.

Does this sound familiar? You reached your 40s or early 50s and don’t feel like yourself anymore. And it’s really upsetting and ungrounding to not feel like yourself.
Perimenopause and menopause (and if you’re in your 40s, you’re not too young) can bring a wide variety of confusing symptoms, such as:
Hot flashes
Irregular cycles
Increased anger or rage
Increased or new anxiety or panic
Brain fog and memory loss
Insomnia
Joint pain
Vaginal dryness
Urinary symptoms
And that’s the short list! If it feels like every system has gone haywire, you’re not alone. The midlife transition has been described as puberty in reverse, and it can certainly feel that way.
Perimenopause and Menopause Acupuncture FAQ
Q: How long does it take to help? Many people experience improvement in symptoms after their very first treatment, as well as a sense of relaxation and well-being. Followup treatments result in cumulative improvement and are tailored to your body’s unique response to help ensure continued and lasting relief. Because perimenopause can be a multi-year transition, maintenance treatments are sometimes recommended to address new issues if they arise.
Q: What if my doctor has prescribed menopause hormone therapy (hormone replacement therapy)? No problem. My approach doesn’t conflict with this therapy, and can help relieve issues that may still be bothering you even with hormone supplementation.
Q: I see a lot of herbal supplements online for perimenopause and menopause. Do they work? Do you offer those? Some of them may work for some people. However, most supplements are one-size-fits-all approaches, and may not address what you’re experiencing. (For example, it doesn’t help to take something for hot flashes if your problem is feeling angry all the time.) Quality control can also be an issue, meaning that not everything sold contains what it says it contains!
As an experienced Chinese herbalist, I source herbal medicines carefully with an eye toward safety and good manufacturing. I also tailor my prescriptions to your individual consitution. While herbs are not required to work with me, they can help you reach your goals faster.
Q: I’m curious, but I’ve never tried this and don’t like needles. Does acupuncture hurt? No. My acupuncture approach is gentle and pain-free, and my treatment space is comfortable, quiet, and relaxing. Many people fall asleep during treatment and wake refreshed and relaxed.
